Young Citizens In Action is an exciting youth-led volunteering and citizenship programme which helps young people aged 16-30 years become more actively involved in society through volunteering.
Whether you want to develop your career, further your education, improve your confidence or just be more involved in your community, volunteering can help you gain the skills and experience you need. You can be part of a team planning and managing your own projects with the support of staff, or volunteer with a wide variety of community-based organisations. Being part of Young Citizens In Action can provide excellent opportunities to meet new people, try something new and have fun while helping others. Young, Unemployed and Fed up? - Why not help others while helping yourself.
Northern Ireland’s youth employment is one of the highest at 18.6%. Young people, including those with good qualifications, are finding it increasingly difficult to secure employment. Many face the difficult situation of not being able to find work because they lack experience but cannot gain experience because they haven’t got a job. Employers are more likely to be impressed if you have made an effort to help yourself in these gloomy economic times.
Volunteering is a great way to improve your career prospects, gain experience, develop skills, try something new, build confidence, meet new friends. Volunteering is worthwhile, rewarding and great craic but the best thing about volunteering is that you may be helping yourself but you will also be helping others and contributing to your community!

Why Not Ask Me?
The launch of Why Not Ask Me? research into volunteering and community relations amongst young people in Belfast was hosted by BBC’s John Daly and took place on 16 April 2007. The Research was carried out partly as an update to the
One Foot in the Door research publication into youth volunteering produced by VSB in 1998.
The results of new research proved very positive with young people stating that volunteering had a huge impact on their lives and they strongly believe that they are making a massive difference to other people and in their community.
One young person said:
“Volunteering is an experience that benefits me greatly in every aspect of day to day life, qualities I learn such as confidence, being a good team player, self esteem, being able to address a group of people. It is enjoyable, worthwhile and I just love it!”
