Civic Celebration!
21 May 2007
In honour of VSB’s Ruby Anniversary, North Down Borough Council hosted a Civic Reception for volunteers.
North Down Borough Council held a Civic Reception on Friday 18 May 2007 as part of VSB’s 40th year celebrations. The Mayor of North Down, Councillor Alan Leslie and other local councillors welcomed 90 volunteers and representatives from local voluntary organisations with a drinks reception. The guests then enjoyed a buffet followed by entertainment. The Mayor and VSB’s chairman Brian Gibson highlighted the importance of volunteering in North Down and congratulated all the volunteers on their commitment to helping in the community and encouraged them to continue their efforts.
One of VSB’s volunteer drivers, Philip Campbell, also spoke of his feeling of happiness at the end of each day in knowing that he has helped someone. A study conducted by the Volunteer Centre in 2005 showed that 30% of residents in North Down who do not volunteer would be prepared to do so if asked. The Volunteer Centre is calling for people to join the many volunteers in the area. If you would like more information on volunteering opportunities or if you are an organisation that requires volunteers please contact the Volunteer Centre. The Centre would also like to build up a profile of the volunteering effort within North Down and Ards – if you are already a volunteer and would like to register in order to help the Centre do this please contact 028 91270486 or email ruth@vsb.org.uk. The Volunteer Centre is based at 91 High Street in Bangor. VSB would like to thank North Down Borough Council for all their support in making Friday’s reception a truly special event.
